Apply for, Renew, or Replace a PR Card: About the Process

By November 22, 2023 December 5th, 2023 No Comments

The Canadian Permanent Resident (PR) card is more than an identity document. It is issued by Citizenship and Immigration Canada to permanent residents traveling abroad and returning to Canada. That’s why ensuring its validity is crucial for smooth re-entry into the country. Its expiration or damage can disrupt your travel plans.

Here is everything you need to know about the PR card and its renewal process.

Eligibility for PR Card Renewal

You must meet certain conditions to qualify for a PR card renewal. These conditions include:

  • Be a permanent resident of Canada.
  • Submit your application within Canada.
  • If your card is expiring soon, lost, stolen, or requires updates (name change, citizenship, gender designation, or date of birth).
  • You shouldn’t be under an effective removal order.
  • You should be free of any form of criminal conviction.
  • You should not be a Canadian citizen or an Indian registered under the Indian Act.

The PR Card Renewal Application Process

There are three simple stages to applying for, renewing, or replacing your Canadian PR card.

First, you’ll need an application package containing a guide and all the paperwork you need. Second, you’ll pay the application fees, and lastly, submit your application!

Step 1 – Get the Application Package

The application package for your PR card contains essential forms and detailed instructions guiding you through the application process. You should include the following in your application:

#1 Your PR Card: If you are renewing, keep your current card and add a photocopy with your application. In cases of damage or incorrect information, you should submit the card with your application for replacement.

#2 Clear Copy of Identification: Provide a clear copy of your valid passport or travel document. Alternatively, submit the passport or travel document you had when you got your permanent resident status.

#3 Compliant Photographs: Include two photographs that meet IRCC’s photo specifications.

#4 Additional Identity Documents: Furnish any other identity documents outlined in the Document Checklist to support your application.

#5 Proof of Fee Payment: Attach a copy of the receipt confirming payment for processing fees related to your application.

#6 Solemn Declaration: If your PR card was lost, stolen, or destroyed, or you did not receive it within 180 days of arriving in Canada, include a solemn declaration explaining the circumstances.

Step 2 – Pay The Application Fees

The application fee for PR card renewal is $50 per application. This fee is non-refundable, so you should confirm eligibility before application submission and ensure a complete and accurate application to prevent package return. Follow the following steps to make online payments:

  • Visit the CIC e-pay services or use search engines with keywords like “Permanent Residence Documents Online Payment” to locate the payment portal.
  • Create an account using your email or log in if you have an existing e-pay account.
  • Choose the appropriate fee, as per the number of applicants for PR card renewal, and proceed with payment using your credit or debit card.
  • After successful payment, you will receive a receipt through your email address.
  • Print the receipt for inclusion with your application.

Step 3 – Submit Your Application

Once you prepare your application for PR card renewal meticulously and all documentation is in order, it’s time for submission. For mailing your application, use the following address. The address varies slightly depending on how you submit your application.

By Mail

By Courier

Alternatively, if you choose to use a courier service, the address is as follows:
