PGWP holders can apply for a new open work permit

Post-graduation work permits (PGWPs) are open work visas granted for up to three years to international students who complete a program of study in Canada. Candidates who are members of the newly introduced Temporary Resident to Permanent Resident (TR2PR) pathway and whose applications for permanent residence have not yet been approved are also qualified to apply for an open work permit.

Those who want an open work permit can now get one with a December 31, 2024, expiration date if their passport is still valid as of that date, according to the IRCC.

Additionally, according to IRCC, roughly 2,500 TR2PR applicants have already been granted an open work permit under this new policy. The expiration date of these work permits will be December 31, 2022. However, a notice advising eligible holders that they might be able to update their work permit with a more extended validity date will soon be sent through email.
